Q: Can this potentially be used as facial illumination for use with a webcam?

Yes, I have been using the light bar for my Zoom meetings. My monitor is at eye height, so I am able to rotate the light bar upwards to illuminate my face. There are three preset color temperatures and variable intensity. I'm not conducting a business meeting so the light bar works great for me. If one is concerned about how the skin tone appears, there are other products that offer variable color temperature. This light bar is well made and I love the touch controls.

Q: can you close the laptop without removing the light ?

It's a perfect bar light for desktop monitor. The light will most likely shift around when you open and close the laptop lid so you may end up having to re-secure it on the laptop every time.

Q: Does it fit 2.5inch thick monitor?

Don't think so 1-3/8max (34.2 mm) at the edge of the screen.

Q: can I mount a webcam onto the light?

No, you need to mount the webcam to the screen. One end or the other.
