Q: Can I use this to light an outdoor gas fire pit? I was hoping to be able to use this instead of lighting a piece of paper.

I'd think if you're handy with with things you could do it. I'm pretty sure I could and I don't even know just what you have. You'll have to mount the electrode where the flame originates, and the button somewhere accessible. Keep in mind that the wire is only one meter (~39") long, and you'll want to route it so it's outta the way. It's less than $10, and a bit of a gamble. Just go for it. I'm replacing what's on my BBQ. The electrode broke a couple of years ago, so I tapped out a hole for a spark plug, but I gotta turn on the gas for 8 or 10 seconds before sparking it and it goes on with a big hot wooosh - IF it works at all.

The opening for that the igniter goes into is larger than the black cylinder but smaller than the black collar. Remember the device is held in place by a large nut secured beneath the sheet metal shelf.

Complicated question, I’m going to answer it the best way possible. The spark lead at the end of the ceramic igniter is long, bendable, and can be cut shorter. The issue I had is that the Mensi piezo igniters come in two different versions, the model your question is about has a separate ground wire tab on the ignition module, and the spark module has a separate screw eyelet holding it on the grill. The other version has the ground of the ignition module on the threads of the module connecting it to the metal of the grill where it mounts if it’s metal, and the spark module has threading for a nut to go on the one hole. I had to buy both versions because my older Webber Q300 series grill has a plastic ignition mount hole and I needed a separate ground wire tab to wire to the aluminum grill enclosure, but I needed the spark module with the one hole and the threads on the spark module to mount. I bent and cut the lead of the spark module to the recommended spark gap needed to ignite the grill, and has worked perfectly, and even though I had to buy both kits to make it work, it was still cost much less then the Webber name brand kit, and I have enough spare parts to replace again down the road if needed.

Q: Could this be used for a potato cannon?

I do not think so because ceramic idolator most likely is not air tight.
